The selections included canonical and non-canonical writers as the purpose was to find out students' opinions about these texts in terms of gender and ethnicity. The canonical writer was Edgar Allan Poe, American male and well known and his story The Oval Portrait, the non-canonical writers were Sandra Cisneros, a Chicana-Mexican descendant female writer and her story entitled Eleven, two Afro-Americans: Audre Lorne with Harriet and Langston Hughes with I, too sing America . The Oval Portrait is the story of a painter and his wife. The woman dies little by little as her husband is painting her. He does not notice that his wife is dying as he is embedded in his job.
